The Anti-Defamation League, a nonprofit watchdog group, reported a 240% increase in antisemitic incidents in the last five years. White supremacist groups are also stepping up efforts to recruit young men across Michigan. “I’m very, very worried about how comfortable people are feeling with antisemitism in our country,” said Carolyn Normandin, regional director of ADL Michigan.

9 & 10 News May 5, 2021 New details have been revealed regarding an investigation by the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office into a racist group chat. The Grand Traverse County Prosecutor states that the group chat had a total of six members, all of which are minors. Five of the individuals involved live in Grand Traverse County, and one lives outside of the state. Within the group chat, racist and discriminatory comments were made against people of color. The county prosecutor states that while the behavior is reprehensible, it is not criminal. Additionally, they say that the comments were never meant to leave the group chat and were not intended to communicate a threat or instill fear.

Police: Northern Michigan man used Snapchat to lure sexual assault victim An 18-year-old Traverse City man faces three felony sexual assault charges after a six-month investigation into multiple alleged assaults of young females, police said. Michigan State Police began the investigation into Andrew Simmons in August, after a woman and her daughter, a minor, told police she had been assaulted by the man. Police would find several other witnesses and young females in the area to attest to the allegations, and pursued a warrant for his social media records via Snapchat. Police alleged Simmons communicated with the women via the app which allows chatting and features images and videos that disappear in 24 hours.
