We have to rely on the federal government to come in and provide safety and justice for members in our community, she said. Up until 2013, tribes had no ability to prosecute non-natives for domestic and dating violence. That year, they received limited power to do so through a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). But, that measure did not allow tribes to prosecute crimes related to child abuse, sex trafficking, rape or murder.

One arrested as police investigate 3 shooting incidents

The Ottawa County Sheriff s Office investigated three separate incidents of reported gunfire early Sunday morning, two in Allendale Township and one in Park Township.   No one was injured in any of the incidents, according to initial reports from the sheriff s office.  A deputy was investigating a complaint of a loud party in an apartment complex at 48th Avenue and Pierce Street in Allendale Township at 1:21 a.m. May 2 when he was approached by several people who said they had just heard gunshots nearby.  According to police, the deputy then witnessed the driver of a car on 48th Avenue stick a handgun out of the window and point it at a group of people on the sidewalk of 48th Avenue.

COVID cases rise slightly in local schools this week As case rates start to fall in the county and state following a weeks-long surge, several local school districts saw their active case counts increase this week. Compared to this time last week, active cases on Friday, April 30, were higher in four area districts although some only a few cases above last week’s levels.  The following are the most recent case updates from area school districts.  An update from Zeeland Public Schools Friday showed 54 active cases in the district, bringing the year-to-date total to 385. Friday’s count was 11 cases lower than a week ago for ZPS.
