A local elementary school was added to the state’s School-Related Outbreak Report this week, the first in the area to be added since schools returned from spring break.
West Ottawa’s Pine Creek Elementary was added Monday, April 26, with a COVID-19 outbreak of two cases, the minimum to make the report.
The state defines an outbreak as two or more linked cases who may have shared exposure on school grounds and are from different households.
West Ottawa reported 34 active cases in its weekly update Monday morning, down from more than 40 last week. The active cases included 10 at West Ottawa High School.

A Michigan couple is contributing millions in support of their commitment of changing lives through education.
Bob and Ellen Thompson believe in education’s ability to make a significant difference in someone’s life. Their latest gift of $52 million is to support Thompson Working Families Scholarships (TWFS) at four institutions that partner with the Thompson Foundation. The Thompsons already have contributed $33 million to TWFS and the additional $52 million means more than 5,200 students will receive support.

The English division of the School of Arts, Humanities, and English at Diné College is hosting a two-day virtual conference entitled, “Still Sacred: First-Year Writing at the Tribal College.” The conference is organized around re-envisioning a writing curriculum that meets the needs of the college’s students, with presentations and workshops offered by scholars in both writing studies and Indigenous studies.
