Steelcase CEO announces retirement

GRAND RAPIDS, MI Steelcase announced Monday that President and CEO Jim Keane will retire Jan. 7, 2022.
Keane, who has been with the Grand Rapids-based furniture company for 25 years, will be replaced by Sara Armbruster. She joined the company in 2007, during which time she has led Steelcase’s corporate strategy and acquisition activities, the company said. She will be the company’s 10th CEO in its 109-year history.
Keane, 61, will stay on as president and CEO until Oct. 4, after which he will transition to the role of vice chair. He will serve in that role until his retirement.

SAGINAW, MI A lauded Grand Rapids paramedic is criminally charged in Saginaw County with having sexually assaulted a minor.
Prosecutors allege Kevin J. Nawrot, 33, in February either took or met a 15-year-old Saginaw County girl to a hotel in Frankenmuth where he sexually assaulted her. The pair had met online prior to their physical encounter, prosecutors said.
Nawrot and the teenage girl had also exchanged nude photos, prosecutors allege.

The Grand Rapids-based business services nonprofit GROW said Monday that it hired Ysasi for the role, effective April 26. Ysasi will succeed Bonnie Nawara, who announced her retirement in December.
Ysasi comes to GROW from The SOURCE, a nonprofit focused on reducing employment barriers and creating opportunities for mobility for employees that work for their partner organizations, where she was executive director. She also is currently Second Ward commissioner for the city of Grand Rapids.
GROW said its nationwide search for Nawara’s replacement garnered more than 100 applicants. Deborah Phillips, board president, said Ysasi was a standout candidate.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI Herman Miller announced Monday that it plans to buy Pennsylvania-based furniture manufacturer Knoll Inc. for $1.8 billion.
Herman Miller, which is based in Zeeland, said final approval for the deal hinges upon the approval of Herman Miller and Knoll shareholders.
A joint news release issued by the two companies said the deal is expected to close in the third-quarter of this year, and that the combined company is expected to have $3.6 billion in annual revenue. The deal would also “create the preeminent leader in modern design, catalyzing the transformation of the home and office sectors at a time of unprecedented disruption,” the companies said.
