Evgeny Svechnikov’s future in Detroit was in doubt after the Red Wings placed him on waivers Jan. 11.
But after clearing wavers and returning to the Grand Rapids Griffins, it’s clear that Detroit’s former top pick hasn’t given up on his dream of starring for the Red Wings.
It is, however, going to take him some more time to do so.
Svechnikov drew high praise from Grand Rapids coach Ben Simon after the Griffins completed their first day of training camp Sunday at Van Andel Arena. Svechnikov did participate in the Red Wings’ training camp and is now eager to earn a trip back to Detroit.

Howard announced it this morning: Becoming an NHL goalie was a childhood dream and after an incredible 14 years within the Red Wings organization, I ve decided to say farewell to playing professional hockey and move on to the next chapter, the 36-year-old Howard wrote. It has been the honor of a lifetime to play and I m forever thankful to the fans, everyone within the Red Wings organization, my teammates and my family for their ongoing support, loyalty and dedication. As I enter this new chapter in my life, I look forward to spending more time with my family, coaching my son s hockey team and new opportunities the future will hold. -Jimmy Howard via Detroit Red Wings Twitter account.
The Grand Rapids Griffins are about to kick off their season, with their first home game at Van Andel Arena scheduled for February 20th. And unfortunately, when the season starts, fans still won t be allowed in the arena to watch the game, but that s not stopping team officials from still wanting your smiling (or screaming, angry, or funny) face from being at the game.
For a limited time, Griffins fans can purchase cardboard cutouts of themselves, or their pets, wearing Griffins or Red Wings-branded attire that will be placed in the seats at Van Andel Arena for home games during the 2020-21 season.
