NEW DELHI: The BJP would have to win the West Bengal assembly elections with absolute majority if it has to wrest power from chief minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). Otherwise, it might have to sit in the opposition even if it emerges as the single largest party in case the ongoing election throws a hung assembly.
There are three scenarios in West Bengal. Either the TMC or the BJP wins the election by absolute majority or there is a hung assembly.
Government formation would be smooth if either of the two parties crosses the magic number of 147 in the 294-member assembly. The TMC would not have much problem in forming government if it becomes the single-largest party in a hung assembly.

Regardless of the outcome in West Bengal, it is palpable that the State is going through a tectonic ideological shift towards the Hindu Right. Even if the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) wins the Assembly election and forms the government, lessons from Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh suggest that she might not be able to run it for another complete term. For a complete term, she would have to win by a massive margin, like the Aam Aadmi Party did in Delhi. For the TMC, it is not victory itself but the margin of that victory that will determine its future. This means that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in a win-win situation regardless of the outcome.

Jaya Bachchan, the actor-politician, conducted a roadshow in south Kolkata s Tollygunge constituency in support of TMC candidate and West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas.
Aroop Biswas will be facing off against Union Minister Babul Supriyo.
While addressing a crowd, Jaya Bachchan said they have not been able to break West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee s heart, brain, and determination even though her head and leg have been broken . Jaya Bachchan s remark is seen as a reference to the Nandigram incident last month where Mamata Banerjee suffered injuries.
