As the battle for Bengal intensifies, the primary challenger in the fray, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is narrowing down its sights on seats it considers to be the key challenge for itself.
According to sources, 109 assembly segments out of a total of 294 have been identified in the erstwhile Presidency division of Bengal, which will be the focus area for the BJP going forward into the eight-phase elections.

LUCKNOW: Asserting that the wave of public support in favour of the BJP is much stronger in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Sunday said the party will cross the 200-seat mark in the poll-bound eastern state. For the past three months, I have been touring West Bengal from the election point of view and interacting with members of the public, party office bearers and workers. Based on the feedback gathered, I can say that the wave of public support is in favour of the BJP in West Bengal this time, much stronger than the one which swept Uttar Pradesh during the 2017 Assembly elections, he told PTI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) will face massive defeat during the upcoming elections. Chairing a meeting of the BJP s central election committee, the prime minister told leaders the TMC will come to face with its defeat by the end of the second phase elections in West Bengal.Â
The Bharatiya Janata Party s central election committee held its meeting on Saturday to finalise its remaining candidates for the Assam and West Bengal assembly polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among other top party leaders to attend the meeting. Other top leaders who attended the meeting at the BJP headquarters, included Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and party president JP Nadda.
