As of Wednesday, the positivity rate in the county was 16.6%. Halifax Health said COVID-19 hospitalizations have more than doubled in the past week and doctors are anticipating the numbers to stay high through early August. Number of COVID-19 patients needing critical care is soaring in Volusia County

In Flagler and Volusia Counties, hospital officials say there s been a significant increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19.They are well able to handle the case load, but say it s clear the pandemic wave is ongoing.Halifax Health is currently handling 72 COVID-19 positive patients, 23 of which are in intensive care and 11 of those are on ventilators.Health officials say the majority of COVID-19 patients are from the unvaccinated population.“We are higher than any number that we ve had at any point of this pandemic from its beginning,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Margaret Crossman said.Crossman said the mix of summer events and celebrations in an only partially vaccinated population is the reason Halifax Health is seeing an explosion in COVID-19 positive people needing critical care.
