Increase in dogs needing homes as lockdown restrictions ease

Animal charity wants bumper turnout at annual dog show

TALENTED pooches will be put through their paces during a fun-filled fundraising dog show to raise money for an animal rescue charity. Margaret Green Animal Rescue is hoping for a bumper turnout at the charity fundraiser, which is scheduled for August 1. The event, at the charity s Church Knowle rehoming and visitor centre, near Corfe Castle, is a major fundraiser for the organisation, which takes in pets that have become homeless and works to secure them permanent new homes. This year s show, coming just a fortnight after the final stage of Covid restriction easing, boasts a number of attractions. There will be three rings of classes, with contests such as the waggiest tail, child handler, best rescue dog and most appealing eyes.

Margaret Green Animal Rescue receives surprise £2,000 donation

AN ANIMAL rescue centre received a surprise donation over Valentine s weekend to help share the love and care for pets during the pandemic. Margaret Green Animal Rescue at Church Knowle received a surprise £2,000 donation from Support Adoption For Pets over the weekend in recognition of the work the centre has done since the pandemic began. The centre is partnered with Dorchester Pets at Home store through Support Adoption For Pets charity of the year programme, and through this has received a total of £2,451.45 in 2020. In total, Support Adoption For Pets, the UK s largest grant giving animal charity, is giving away nearly £600,000 to rescue centres up and down the country to help them look after animals in their care as the financial hardship of the pandemic continues.

Hundreds of cockerels being dumped by owners

Hundreds of cockerels have been abandoned by people who tried to raise hens amid fears of an egg shortage during the first coronavirus lockdown. The novice owners bought fertilised eggs and then hatched them themselves in the hope of having hens which could lay edible eggs.  But when in many cases male birds were born instead, owners decided their noisy crowing was too much for them and their neighbours to bear. That, coupled with new bird flu regulations imposed in December, meant that the RSPCA was forced to deal more than 1,500 cockerels and hens in 2021.  Other unscrupulous owners have taken to dumping them in the countryside.
