Madison Bach Musicians invites you to join usâfrom the intimacy and safety of your homeâfor a musical journey through 17th & 18th-century Europe.
A Baroque Tour will explore the glorious sonic landscapes of Italy, Spain, France, England, and Germany through masterworks by Vivaldi, Falconieri, De Castro, Charpentier, Guillermain, Purcell, Handel, and Buxtehude. Our program ensemble consists of five strings plus harpsichord, and we are thrilled that baroque bassoon virtuoso Marc Vallon will join us for Vivaldiâs exuberant Bassoon Concerto in Bb major.
A Baroque Tour will be broadcast from the acoustically spectacular sanctuary of Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday evening April 24. Join us for your holiday soundtrack! As always, we are happy to bring you rich and joyful music for the Christmas season from the WHRO FM library, along with special programs from American Public Media, the WFMT Radio Network, and more.
Here are some highlights of what’s in store:
Thursday, December 17:
9 p.m. – A Soulful Christmas from American Public Media
Julie Amacher and Tesfa Wondemagegnehu host this uplifting Christmas special that features Black music and composers. A Soulful Christmas celebrates classical music by Black artists, while exploring Spirituals, Gospel Music, Jazz and other Black musical traditions.
From the secular world to the Church
These musical traditions are plentiful and diverse in style. In synchrony with the expectation of a Savior, greet the return of light to our dark winter and the return of light.
An entire repertoire of secular songs, such as noels and carols, was born in the Middle Ages in Central European, Iberian, Romanesque and Anglo-Saxon countries.
The liturgy often borrowed them to ensure the participation of the faithful. They found their way into choirs initiated by the Lutheran Reformation, Catholic hymns and motets.
From Josquin des Prés to Olivier Messiaen, composers have also drawn from this heritage and enriched it with works of religious or secular inspiration, vocal or instrumental.
