FAIRMONT Martin County Commissioners heard from Chief Deputy Corey Klanderud Tuesday, concerning the county’s jail food service contract with Hy-Vee in Fairmont. Notice was received from Hy-Vee that they will no longer be able to provide that service to the jail, and the county received notice that the service would be terminated by the end of May 2021. Klanderud explained the situation.
“We’ve reached out to numerous other possibilities,” he said. “We’ve been in talks with one, we’ve got nothing truly figured out yet.” Klanderud said that there were some meetings scheduled with potential providers in the near future.

FAIRMONT Martin County Commissioners heard form Jen Kahler, Executive Director for Kinship of Martin County on Monday, as well as Associate Director Katy Gonzalez. The pair gave a brief update concerning the youth mentoring program. Kahler noted that the program was able to match 14 mentors and Mentees in the midst of the pandemic in 2020.
“We’re thankful for all the nice weather we had and for all the people that were willing to meet with us in parks and shelters to do a lot of match meetings,” said Kahler. “As far as our numbers go, we’re currently at 31 percent of both our matches and our waiting list youth are from outside of Fairmont proper.”

FAIRMONT Martin County Commissioners heard from Robert Long of Larkin Hoffman Attorneys of Bloomington Tuesday, who reviewed the county’s state general obligation bond request for Martin County to construct, furnish, and equip a new regional justice center.
Long has been representing a $20 million state bonding request for the county.
The proposed justice center is meant to provide space for functions related to the multi-county justice system needs for female offenders, juveniles, and mental health services.
“After talking with Senator Julie Rosen and [Representative] Bjorn Olson, we concluded that we should get a bill ready,” Long said.
