PHOTOS COURTESY PATRIANN SMITH - While certain parts of the education system in the Caribbean seem more advanced than that of the US, the way it tends to approach literacy is often years behind other countries, says Dr Patriann Smith, assistant professor in the College of Education at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Florida. “It seemed that I had undertaken so much more work in my teacher-training diploma in TT than in my master s degree in the US. Jamaican Artist, Basil Watson, Who Sculpted Atlanta s New MLK Statue Says It Is A Dream Come True – Repeating Islands

Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr Day 2021, the City of Atlanta has unveiled the new statue of the civil rights activist, created by Jamaican-born artist Basil Watson. The 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture, titled ‘Hope Moving Forward’, was unveiled on January 14 during a small ceremony attended by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and other city officials. The statue stands at the intersection of Northside Drive and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Basil Watson, the renowned Jamaican sculptor who created the statue, said it was a “dream come true” when he was chosen by the City of Atlanta to create a larger-than-life statue.

From pandemic to poverty

TWO days before its welcome end, the Trump regime’s “1776 Commission” released a new report, designed, said a White House statement, to counter efforts “to reframe American history around the idea that the United States is not an exceptional country but an evil one.” With consistent insensitivity, it chose Martin Luther King Jr Day to disseminate its “patriotic education curriculum,” which, among other things, justified the hypocrisy of the founding fathers for holding slaves while criticising the institution of slavery. It also took a pointed shot at Marxism which it described as a “radical rejection of human dignity.” Widely panned by actual historians, the report was immediately deleted by the new White House, part of a pile of detritus which the administration of President Joe Biden will now have to expend precious time binning.

CDC and CAB partner to recognize importance of Martin Luther King Jr day

On Friday, January 22 USD’s Center for Diversity and Community (CDC) and the Campus Activities Board (CAB) partnered to host an event for students to honor the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. day. The CDC and CAB presented a movie displayed throughout the MUC for students, staff and faculty as well as various treats for them to enjoy while watching. The movie was also streamed online for those who still wanted to watch but did not want to attend in the MUC. The movie presented was called “If Beale Street Could Talk,” a movie that takes place in the 1970’s and follows an African American couple whose lives are turned upside down when one is arrested for a crime they did not commit.
