A Central Pa Group Works To Elect Progressive Candidates, From Presidential To Hyper-Local

6:45 On a recent Sunday afternoon, Tierra Williams and Rich Biever co-hosted a “politics and poetry” event at the Tudek Park in State College.  “The purpose of this event is to gather in the name of change,” Biever announced.  Both Biever and Williams are candidates in this year’s municipal elections. Williams is running for a seat on the Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors and Biever is a candidate for the State College Borough Council. They’re backed by Central Pennsylvania United, a local advocacy group trying to bring candidates with progressive platforms to local office. The organization partners with Pennsylvania United, a PAC based in Pittsburgh.

In the 1960s, health care for Black residents in rural Mississippi was practically non-existent. While some hospitals served Black patients, they struggled to stay afloat; most options were segregated. During the height of the civil rights movement, young Black doctors decided to launch a movement of their own. “Mississippi was third-world and was so bad and so separated. The community health center movement was the conduit for physicians all over this country who believed that all people have a right to health care,” said Dr. Robert Smith.

Violence stokers must go | Opinion Updated Feb 04, 2021; Kudos to the Sunday Patriot-news for calling out elected leaders like Scott Perry who are stoking hatred and violence, and also for including Becky Bennett’s answer to our deep divisions. Much work needs to be done on both fronts stopping the hatred and coexistence. Having leaders who support unity amidst diversity, truthfulness instead of propaganda, and tolerance instead of racial hatred is a good first step. By that measure indeed, Perry and other violence stokers must go. But that will not be enough to undo the decades of learned hatred, economic insecurity and racial fears that plague our society.
