New studies on genetic breast cancer risks will help in counseling patients, experts say

Breast cancer specialists are welcoming information from two, recently-released studies that estimated risks for the disease from certain genetic variants and mutations.
“These studies provide welcome information outlining estimated risks of breast cancer in less well-studied genes,” said Baystate Health’s Dr. Grace Makari-Judson. “Many of these genes are considered as ‘low-to-moderate penetrance genes,’ meaning that most people that inherit these genes will still not develop cancer. An imaging test that measures the function of estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells can distinguish patients likely or unlikely to benefit from hormone therapy, a new study shows.
Hormone therapy is commonly given as a targeted treatment for women whose cancer cells carry receptors for estrogen. But the therapy only works for about half of all patients. Until now, there hasn’t been a good way to reliably predict who will benefit and who will not.
In a small phase 2 clinical trial, researchers showed that the cancers of all patients with working estrogen receptors remained stable or improved on hormone therapy, and progressed in all women with nonfunctional estrogen receptors.

Play for P.I.N.K. to benefit breast cancer research

The Dunes Women’s Golf Association is making plans for its annual Play for P.I.N.K. fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which will be held on March 27 at the Dunes Golf and Tennis Club on Sanibel. With support from financial institutions, private foundations, artists and businesses, more than $36,000 was raised at last year’s tournament and donated to the foundation. Thanks to the support of the Estée Lauder Foundation, 100 percent of funds raised go to breast cancer research. The association reported that this year’s silent auction and raffles will be modified due to COVID-19.
