PETERSBURG What do Shell gasoline and a background in law-enforcement training have in common?
For local civic leader Marlow Jones, that connection could have been the difference between life and death. His own.
Jones, a former Petersburg fire marshal and City Council candidate known for his activities in the Petersburg business and safety communities, was the victim of an attempted robbery Tuesday night at the Slip In convenience store on South Crater Road. He posted on his Facebook page 45 seconds of store-surveillance video that shows him being approached by the suspects, one of them brandishing a weapon, as well as him fleeing the scene on foot and running across four lanes of Crater Road traffic.

When curator Karen M. Gutfreund began working on the exhibition “Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America,” she spent time reflecting on gun violence in the United States. The topic, which is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago, remains highly polarized.
Ultimately, Gutfreund developed a large group show currently on display at three Syracuse galleries: ArtRage, Community Folk Art Center, and Point of Contact. The exhibit, featuring works by 36 artists, explores the role of guns in our society and emphasizes the impact of gun-related violence on children, women, and people who are marginalized.

One Petersburg Flea Market has been a labor of love for former Petersburg Fire Marshall and city resident Marlow Jones. The idea was years in the making before opening in November.
Unfortunately, the market was forced to shut down less than a month later when Gov. Ralph S. Northam reinstated stricter COVID-19 guidelines which limited the number of people at social gatherings.
The flea market is a place where people can come to sell anything - clothes, handmade artwork, cleaning supplies, jewelry, toys, electronics, furniture. Becoming a spot for people to start up a side business or connect with other people was a critical motivation for opening the market.
