Historically a bleak time of the year, the freezing cold and grey skies of late winter months cause an uptick in mental health issues. “This time of the year is important really because of the environmental factors,” Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) Director of Special Services Matt Cretsinger said. “The weather really plays into things. As people we need sunlight, we need fresh air.”

Six Iowa school districts announce plans to leave CIML

Updated: 7:02 AM CST Mar 2, 2021 Chris Gothner Six central Iowa school districts announced Monday that their athletic teams will leave the Central Iowa Metro League as soon as possible.Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Mason City and Ottumwa plan withdrawal from the CIML later this spring.In a letter sent to CIML superintendents and obtained by KCCI, Marshalltown Community School District Superintendent Theron Schutte wrote that the six schools would leave the conference for “the purpose of creating a new conference where our students can have a more equitable and successful interscholastic experience. Ramirez is one of 5,332 students enrolled in the Marshalltown Community School District a reduction from last school year, but the district has proven it attracts students after setbacks. The Marshalltown Community School District lost 87.9 students in the past year, according to certified enrollment from the Iowa Department of Education (DOE). However, the loss was to be expected, as numerous public school districts across the state faced student population losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual certified enrollment is used by the DOE in the Iowa School Finance Formula for district funding, meaning districts receive money from the state based on the number of students.
