NEW ORLEANS (press release) – On Friday, Jan. 15, local nonprofit organization Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL) will launch its
Reforesting Pontchartrain Park campaign, an exciting new initiative to plant 700 native trees in historic Pontchartrain Park one in front of every home. Trees planted during this project will mitigate stormwater runoff, cool and clean the air, and create shade and beauty. The organization is working closely with the Pontchartrain Park Neighborhood Association to coordinate these efforts and with the Water Collaborative of Greater New Orleans on educational outreach.
SOUL is proud to announce this new project on a day both honoring the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and celebrating Louisiana State Arbor Day. In accordance with the City’s Modified Phase One response to COVID-19, the campaign launch will take place online. Additional details can be accessed at

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell announced Wednesday that the city will fall back to a modified Phase 1.
The announcement came as the COVID-positivity rate in Orleans Parish jumped to 10.4%. That’s up from 5.5 percent.
Every #COVID19 measure we re watching is indicating major community outbreak in #NOLA:
Positive test rate skyrocketed to over 10% in one week
Daily new cases 7x higher than in fall months
There have been more than 21,000 positive cases of Coronavirus and 685 deaths.
No gatherings except for people who live together in a single household
All indoor activities reduced to 25% occupancy There is a light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines underway in Louisiana. But vaccines only work for those who are alive to receive the shot,” added New Orleans Health Department Chief Jennifer Avegno. We need everyone s cooperation. If you can work from home, work from home. If you have a playdate, dinner party, sleepover . please cancel it. If you are an essential worker, wear a mask at all times and keep your distance from others as much as possible.
