GUWAHATI: The Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) organised a virtual meeting to review the implementation of child protection services as part of a ongoing multiphased webinar.
Dr. Sunita Changkakati, Chairperson of ASCPCR welcomed all the participants to the webinar and informed about the objective of the webinar. She mentioned in her address about the need to keep a check in the safety of children during covid, especially those who may have been orphaned due to covid-19.
As it was observed last year, numerous cases of crimes against children were registered during the lockdown period. Therefore she encouraged all participants to continue rendering their duties through virtual medium and also on ground as child protection duty bearers also constitute the frontline workers.
Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani took to Twitter to flag adoption requests as illegal and urged people to prevent trafficking in the garb of adoption and report all such cases to 1098 or police or a Child Welfare Committee.
In Odisha’s Ganjam district, a 45-day-old girl was found next to her mother’s body, when neighbours broke open the door of their house in Golapalli village. Suspecting it to be a case of death due to COVID-19, the local police sent the corpse for post-mortem and contacted the centre in-charge for Childline 1098, the national helpline for children, to arrange help for the toddler.
The child protection units offer counselling, and will also conduct awareness programmes for the public on how to contact the government about children orphaned due to COVID-19

“For Adoption: If anyone wishes to adopt a girl, please feel free to contact Priyanka. One girl is three days old and another is six months old, they have lost their parents recently due to covid. Please help these kids get a new life, spread the word.” Such messages about illegal adoptions have been circulating on social media platforms, especially during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Child rights activists want the government to create awareness about adoption and monitor such illegal adoption networks to prevent trafficking of children. They also want the government to involve civil society organisations to monitor and follow up with families affected by COVID-19.
