Enquiries ongoing after Cumberland Street attack
Police are today examining the scene of yesterday’s attack in the Dunedin Central Countdown supermarket on Cumberland Street.
“Gathering evidence from the scene is one of our top priorities today. This includes photography, blood sampling and collection of any discarded items for further examination,” Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham says.
“We’ve also been working to identify and speak to as many witnesses as possible, and of course, the victims who remain front of mind.
“We are currently assessing how best to support them and their whānau.
“All four remain in hospital – one in a moderate condition and three others in a serious but stable condition.

Survivors of a knife attack in a Dunedin supermarket have a long road ahead in their recovery, police said, as the man allegedly responsible was remanded in custody after being charged with four counts of attempted murder. Two police officers, one of whom was off duty, were among staff and bystanders at Countdown on Cumberland St who helped subdue a man who stabbed staff and shoppers on Monday. “The actions of those two officers helped to de-escalate the situation and minimise any further harm,” Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham said on Tuesday.

Sydney, Australia, May 10 (EFE).- Four people were injured, three of them critically, in a supermarket knife attack on Monday afternoon in New Zealand’s South Island city of Dunedin.
Although investigations are in the early stages, authorities believe that it was a random attack and not a terrorist incident.
Just before 2.30 pm, emergency services were called to Countdown Supermarket in central Dunedin and upon arrival, “police located four people with serious stab-related injuries,” Southern District Commander Superintendent Paul Basham said in a statement.
“We also located a man, who had been detained by members of the public, that we believe is allegedly responsible for this incident,” Basham said.
