Glencore Kidd Operations recently donated $80,000 to the four local school boards in the Timmins region to help support students and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
All four recipients, Conseil scolaire catholique de district des Grandes Rivières, Conseil scolaire public du Nord-Est de l’Ontario, District School Board Ontario North East, and Northeastern Catholic District School Board will each receive $20,000 in funding through the Glencore Community Support Fund.

More Indigenous students earning credits with new learning model: school board

High school students who identify as Indigenous are earning more credits with the new learning system being used by District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1), according to the board’s data.
In September, the public board implemented a new learning model, called octomester, designed to limit the spread of COVID-19 and reduce student-to-student contacts.
Last year, students would take four courses a day each semester.
With the new system, secondary school students, who opted for in-class learning, focus on one course for about 22 days. There are eight rotations in a school year.

District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) is informing parents that due to the Provincial Lockdown on Boxing Day “students will engage in one week of distance learning, starting on Monday, January 4, 2021 (and) will welcome all students back for face-to-face learning on Monday, January 11, 2021.”
In a letter to families Director of Education Lesleigh Dye states “On Monday, January 4, 2021, teachers will post work online and will contact their students to welcome them back. Synchronous learning will resume on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. The Policy/Program Memorandum No. 164 outlines requirements for distance learning.

Northeastern school board preparing for week-long virtual learning blitz
Students and teachers are currently on their two-week winter vacation. But because Ontario is heading into a lockdown, there will be some changes when classes resume in early January.
