UDUPI/BENGALURU: Long pending demand of coastal districts for a separate sand policy moved a step closer to reality with minister for mines and geology Murugesh Nirani on Friday announcing the same on the floor of the legislative assembly. The issue had gained traction with a high powered meeting that then minister CC Patil held in Mangaluru on January 7 wherein Patil had assured that a separate policy is on the government’s mind.
Answering a question the Mangaluru MLA U T Khader raised during question hour, Nirani said a separate sand policy will be introduced to help the people of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts in the coastal region. “The construction activities are affected in many parts of the state due to shortage of sand. The government will take necessary steps to prevent such problems in any part of the state,” Nirani added.
