Erie County s top prosecutor says there s been a lot of unemployment insurance fraud attempted during the pandemic, with tens of thousands of attempts within New York to file claims under other people s names. District Attorney John Flynn knows this, because he s among the victims.
Flynn confirmed Thursday that earlier in the week, he learned of a fraudulent unemployment claim filed using his name and information. He received a letter from the New York State Department of Labor Monday, and reported the fraud the following day.

“Whenever this happens, immediately they - they being the Department of Labor - go to the person s employer, said Flynn of the state s investigation. So they went to the County of Erie. The County of Erie knew right away that I had never been laid off, nor I had never taken any time off. So it was caught and frozen right away. The person never got any money at all.”

“We have individuals who are taking care of elderly, taking care of people who are vulnerable, and they are obviously misusing their authority and their position,” Flynn said. “And, obviously, I want the public to know that when I become aware of this, we are going to bring these elderly and vulnerable people justice, and pursue everyone and anyone who is stealing from older people.”
One of the defendants is a former Erie County employee. Tamara Ebo, who was a case worker for the Department of Social Services’ adult protective services until she was fired in November, allegedly stole over $42,000 in Social Security benefits from 14 different clients, most of whom were elderly.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) â Martin Gugino, the man seen being pushed to the ground during last June s protests in Niagara Square, says he s shocked that the charges against the officers were dropped. It s a surprise and I think the whole world is going to be surprised, Gugino said.
Buffalo Police officers Aaron Torgalski and Robert McCabe were charged with felony assault as the result of a confrontation between them and protester Martin Gugino. Today, a grand jury dismissed the charges. District Attorney John Flynn says they no longer face any charges.
