LEWISTOWN The need for emergency medical technicians is at a critical point on both a local and a national level.
Local emergency agencies like Fame EMS in Lewistown are regularly looking to fill volunteer and career EMT positions, says Troy Long, paramedic at Fame, who is also the program coordinator and EMT instructor at The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology.
“There is a severe shortage of EMTs and paramedics so we are well headed down the highway of a real EMS disaster in a few years,” he said. “The volunteer organizations are just like the career organizations. They can’t get enough manpower. They can’t hire enough EMTs or paramedics.”

LEWISTOWN The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology was one of nine schools to receive a grant from the American Welding Society Foundation to improve the training capacity of its welding program.
According to a news release from the AWS, the Academy was presented with a $25,000 grant, which it will use to support the needs of local industries.
“We initially applied for the grant to help get some of the critical testing equipment needed to become an accredited testing facility through AWS,” said Mike McMonigal, supervisor of adult education and post-secondary education at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology. “We hope that utilizing the grant will get our students and the program the edge it needs to be a leading welding facility within central Pennsylvania.”

LEWISTOWN The best way to get students back in the classroom is for the community to follow guidelines put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mifflin County School District’s Board of Directors agreed during its meeting Thursday night.
Board member Frederick Nickel raised concerns regarding rising failure rates as some students are dealing with truancy issues.
Administration announced recently that truancy was a growing problem this year as students do their school work remotely.
Frederick cited an article from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association that he said indicates schools aren’t “super spreaders” of COVID-19.
