LEWISTOWN Mifflin County High School will be closed through Sunday and students will engage in remote learning for the rest of the week after Mifflin County School District administration were contacted on Tuesday by officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
According to a letter from MCSD chief operations officer Vance Varner, which was sent to parents via the district’s Skylert messaging system, the health department made the recommendation to close because it is concerned there are more COVID-19 cases among high school students that are not yet symptomatic.
The district reports that since April 10, a total of 23 students have reported testing positive for COVID-19 and that currently 133 MCHS students are quarantined.

LEWISTOWN Mifflin County High School and The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology announced Wednesday that both buildings will be closed until Monday due to the number of active COVID-19 cases within the schools.
Students at both schools The Academy serves students from both the Mifflin County and Juniata County school districts will receive remote instruction today and Friday, which will include synchronous live sessions for students. A schedule of these classes will be sent to parents and posted on the MCHS website.
The buildings will be thoroughly cleaned during the closure per Pennsylvania Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
Retired teacher to start new candidacy

LEWISTOWN Retired teacher Mark Baker has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Mifflin County School District Board of Directors.
Baker, a Republican and lifelong resident of Mifflin County, is a 1978 graduate of Lewistown Area High School as well as the Juniata-Mifflin Area Vocational Technical School, and graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1983.
Baker worked at J.M. Young and Sons in Belleville as a roofer before starting a teaching career. On June 30, 2020 he retired from teaching building trades at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology after 35 years of service.
