The Mississippi State Department of Health found 10 new COVID-19 South African variant cases among residents in long-term care facilities who were already fully vaccinated against the virus, the department announced Thursday.
Residents who contracted the variant are associated with outbreaks in Bedford Care Center Monroe Hall in Forrest County and Landmark of Collins in Covington County.

While these illnesses are caused by variant strains, the outcomes of all these cases would likely be much more severe if they were not vaccinated, State Epidemiologist Paul Byers said in the release.
