COVID-19 in Mississippi: 172 new cases, 10 deaths reported April 27

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 172 new cases of COVID-19 and 10 coronavirus-related deaths Tuesday. Since the virus hit the state in March 2020, a total of 311,159 cases and 7,188 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported.  According to a New York Times database Tuesday, at least 479 new coronavirus deaths and 47,430 new cases were reported in the U.S. on Monday. Over the past week, there has been an average of 55,058 cases per day, a decrease of 20% from the average two weeks earlier. The health department on Tuesday reported 27 outbreaks at Mississippi nursing homes. There have been 10,442 cases of the coronavirus in long-term care facilities, and 1,974 deaths reported as of April 16, the latest figures available.
