Former Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason died Friday at 64

View Comments Former Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason, a longtime lawman, died at home Friday night, said Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart. He was 64.  Mason battled prostate cancer for several years, including his final days as the county s top copy. Mason began his term as sheriff in January 2016, bringing with him over 35 years of law enforcement experience   from the Jackson Police Department to several state and federal investigations, including FBI task forces, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Secret Service and the Mississippi Office of the Attorney General s Public Integrity Unit.  Mason was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018. He began treatments immediately after the diagnosis. A deeply religious man, Mason said at the time he was relying on his faith.

According to Fox 13 Memphis TV News, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) interviewed Yo Gotti’s CMG artist and the other suspects over two days after one person was wounded on the Interstate 55 highway. The suspects in four police-tracked vehicles were apprehended during a stop on Highway 6 in Batesville after the Senatobia Police Department received a call from the victim around 1 p.m. local time that day. Senatobia officers found a gun, drugs and cash in one of the seized vehicles, which was driving southbound on that highway before it was pulled over at Exit 6. The SPD then requested additional law enforcement agencies to the scene including the Tate County Sheriff’s Office, Batesville Police Department, Panola County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and others.
