It seems unity between government leaders in Lansing these days makes for good speeches, but not much more.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, in her State of the State address on Wednesday, called for more bipartisan unity, at the same time digging her heels in deeper regarding COVID-19 discussions the next morning.
GOP leaders mentioned unity, but threatened to hold up coronavirus relief funds unless the governor relaxes some restrictions around the state, including those on high school sports.
At the same time, they rejected 13 appointments she proposed for state boards.
Michigan High School Athletic Association officials want winter sports to start next week, while local health departments worry about not having enough vaccines to meet the needs of residents right now.

A local legislator is urging the governor and the state health department to let all high school athletes participate in their winter sports.
The fight over whether to allow youth contact sports to resume took center court, Thursday, in Lansing, as Michigan lawmakers heard testimony from educators, parents and students wanting to get back to competition. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has continued to push back the start date for winter high school contact sports. That date currently stands at February 21st.
Republican State Senator Lana Theis of Brighton Township chairs the Senate Education and Career Readiness Committee, which on Thursday adopted Senate Resolution 7, urging Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the state health department to end the suspension on sports and allow play to resume immediately. EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association has reaffirmed its commitment to play Winter sports when current restrictions are lifted by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The winter contact sports of basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling are allowed presently to participate in non-contact activities only due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The non-contact Winter sports of bowling, girls gymnastics, skiing and boys swimming & diving are able to participate in those activities fully.
The M.D.H.H.S. limitations on Winter contact sports were extended last week through February 21.
