ABC 10/CW5 UP Health System - Marquette DLP A local hospital system could possibly be holding an election to form a union. Medical Techs and Respiratory Therapists at UP Health Systems Marquette have filed paperwork with the National Labor Relations Board to form a union with the Michigan Nurses Association. The additional staff would be joining over 300 nurses at UPHS Marquette who are currently MNA members. If the effort is successful, it will be one of the largest groups of health care workers to win a union through the NLRB since the start of the pandemic. The staff have a hearing about the election scheduled in two weeks.

34 cases screened positive for variants of concern Sault Area Hospital (SAH) confirmed Tuesday that one COVID-19 positive patient from the Greater Toronto Area will be admitted this week. The hospital is preparing to receive one to two patients a day, depending on critical care capacity in our hospital. The release states that patients transferred to the local hospital could be patients with COVID-19 or without COVID-19. Additionally, the local hospital is ramping down on non-urgent and non-emergent surgeries. On Tuesday, a directive was issued by chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams, which meant Northern Ontario hospitals are no longer exempt from the directive to cancel all non-urgent surgeries, in order to clear space for a potential influx of COVID-19 patients.

Nurses call on federal officials to increase OSHA standards for COVID workplaces

Michigan nurses took their concerns about COVID-19 workplace issues to members of Congress Thursday. Many Michigan hospitals are at or near their capacity limits as the state struggles with another surge in COVID cases. During a zoom conference with Michigan congresswomen Debbie Dingell and Rashida Tlaib, nurses said the recent surge in COVID cases is showing again problems in Michigan hospitals that have existed since the pandemic began. Jamie Brown is the president of the Michigan Nurses Association. She says the Biden administration must follow through on promises to improve conditions for nurses treating COVID patients. “We need the federal government to bring real tangible results to nurses at the hospital bedside and we need it now,” says Brown.
