Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday signed HB 4469, which appropriates $37.8 million in Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grants to support 76 recreation projects and land purchases throughout Michigan. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board recommended the grants in December. “The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund supports quality outdoor recreation, giving Michiganders the ability to safely enjoy the outdoors and boosting local economies,” Whitmer said in a statement. “This funding is crucial to helping communities utilize their natural resources and make Michigan’s public spaces more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors. I am proud to sign this piece of bipartisan legislation into law and support Michigan’s recreational resources and economy.”

Gretchen Whitmer says the state of Michigan will attempt to seize any profits that Enbridge makes from operating the controversial Line 5 oil pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac if the company doesn’t comply with her order to shut the line down this week. In letter to Enbridge Vice President Vern Yu on Tuesday, May 11, Whitmer said the state will pursue trespass and unjust enrichment claims in court if Enbridge moves oil through the line in violation of her November shutdown order, which goes into effect at midnight on Wednesday.

Sheriff receives ‘Slow No Wake’ grant Hillsdale Daily News HILLSDALE The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office has received a $10,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to enforce the “Slow No Wake” law.  “These monies will allow us to spend more time and resources on the water,” Hillsdale County Sheriff Scott Hodshire said.  Hodshire said the sheriff’s office Marine Patrol Division will dedicate one Marine Patrol Deputy to enforce this law which will allow other Marine Deputies to look for operators that are driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol and other violations.  “It is our duty to protect you, the boater, from dangerous activities from other boaters,” Hodshire said. “We will again this year perform a “Dry Water” enforcement. We want all boaters to enjoy their time on the water without having to worry about getting injured by careless boaters.”

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers to check for a clip on the adipose fin – that small, fleshy fin behind the dorsal fin, the next time they catch a trout or salmon. If they do, reporting them could earn $100. Captain Chuck’s II in Ludington, Moonshine Lures, Jay’s Sporting Goods, Blood Run Tackle and Collins Design and Build are sponsoring 33 rewards worth $100 each for fish with tags submitted before Nov. 1.

DNR Oman Creek boating access site open in Gogebic County Oman Creek boating access site open in Gogebic CountyContact: James Peace, DNR Parks and Recreation Division, 906-842-3341 Agency: Natural Resources Recent $40,000 dredging project completed The Michigan Department of Natural Resources boating access site at Oman Creek has opened for the season. Seasonal dredging operations were completed May 5 and the site will be dredged weekly through Sept. 29. Dredging helps clear sediment washed into the creek and river mouth over the winter months, and maximizes the safe passage of boat traffic into and out of Lake Superior. Money for the dredging was derived from waterways capital outlay funding. The boating access site is situated on Oman Creek, just upstream from Lake Superior at Little Girls Point.
