Campground and harbor hosts volunteer for 30 hours a week. In exchange, campground hosts can camp for free for up to a month at 122 state parks and state forest campgrounds. Harbor hosts receive a free harbor slip. There is also a similar program hosting the Hartwick Pines Memorial Building.
All volunteers must be at least 18 years old, provide their own camping or boating equipment, be available at least five days a week, and pass a background check.

The extremely rare, and even harder to spot, “ghost cat” has been sighted in Michigan a confirmed 65 times in the past 13 years, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
While cougars were originally native to Michigan, but were eliminated from the state around the turn of the 20th century. However, Michigan sightings were becoming more frequent in the mid- to late 2000s. In response, the DNR created the cougar team in 2008 to review and verify reports.
