LANSING, MI The Michigan Department of Civil Rights has taken notice of a recent incident involving a Mount Pleasant schoolgirl having her hair cut by a fellow student and then by a staff member, incidents that have garnered public outcry.
“We are deeply concerned about the reported incident in a Mount Pleasant school involving a 7-year-old child whose hair was cut without her parent’s permission,” said James E. White, the department’s director. “We are in contact with the school administration and the child’s family to ascertain the facts and circumstances that led to this unfortunate event and to decide on next steps.”

KALAMAZOO, MI The city of Kalamazoo has a list of ideas to help address the issues related to housing, which is among the city’s top priorities.
Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson put on a hard hat during the Monday, April 19, City Commission meeting as he talked to his fellow commissioners about a need for more people to enter the construction trades. The mayor expressed the hope the city can work with contractors as one strategy to provide the housing needed in Kalamazoo.
“If you look through the list of things we have planned for this city and all the work that needs to be done, I am encouraging anybody who is interested at all in helping do this work, to get into the trades,” Anderson said during Monday’s meeting.
