GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â A Lansing man was sentenced to more than 11 years behind bars for his role in a nine-person drug trafficking conspiracy.
Lansing resident Jesus Cortez, 40, was sentenced to 137 months imprisonment, U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge announced Monday.
The conspiracy involved delivering drugs from Mexico to 11 counties in Michigan including Alger, Luce, Allegan, Berrien, Branch, Grand Traverse, Ingham, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa and Van Buren.
The drug trafficking conspiracy also included distributing Suboxone and methamphetamine inside correctional facilities, according to the Department of Justice.
COVID-19 cases increasing in Michigan

New coronavirus cases increased in 3.5% in Michigan in the latest week ending Sunday as the state added 53,296 cases. The previous week had 51,512 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Michigan ranked first among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week the United States added 472,154 reported cases of coronavirus, a decrease of 3.4% from the week before. Across the country, 21 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Another 40 COVID-19 deaths were also reported Friday. This increases Michigan s death toll to 16,771.
In the state’s latest update on vaccines, 91,903 doses were administered in Michigan on Wednesday. The seven-day average for doses administered is 85,287, below the state s target of 100,000 a day. Of the population 16 and older, 29% are fully vaccinated, with a goal of 70% vaccinated by the end of the year.
As of Friday, Michigan has 3,325 confirmed cases of the UK variant (B.1.1.7) and five probable cases, with 513 confirmed cases reported in the Michigan Department of Corrections. In addition, there are 14 confirmed and two probable cases of the B.1.351 strain first detected in South Africa. Two strains originally detected in California, B.1.427 and B.1.429, account for 26 and 45 cases, respectively, and there have been 23 confirmed cases of the P.1 strain originally detected in Brazil. Michigan has a total of 3,440 variant cases.
