LANSING, Mich.-The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), in partnership with the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce and others, has been awarded a $500,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to support the Michigan Agriculture and Food System Workforce Advancement Initiative. This new initiative will support Michigan s food and agriculture industry by developing agriculture technology education and career pathways for migrant and seasonal farmworkers. LAPEER, Mich. (WXYZ) â The Kaiser Family Foundation says half of Americans get their health insurance through their employer. It raises the question, if you get your insurance through work, what happens if your employer fails to pay the insurance bill?
Workers at one local company say there is a massive loophole in the law putting half of all Americans at risk of financial disaster.
People who used to work for Lapeer Industries, a defense contractor that went bankrupt in 2020, have filed a class-action lawsuit in Oakland County Court. Workers suing say they were told not only by the company that health insurance would be taken care of but they were told by their insurer McLaren Health that they had coverage.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration have scheduled a joint public hearing for the 26th. One of the most critical decisions facing the departments is whether to follow a request from the Whitmer administration to make some current COVID-19 workplace rules permanent. That includes workplace and business setting mask rules and working from home rules.

SodexoMAGIC will no longer provide food service for Saginaw Public School District

SAGINAW, MI After June, SodexoMAGIC will no longer provide food service for Saginaw Public Schools.
The shift away from the nutritional services provider will result in six layoffs, according to a WARN notice submitted to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, Workforce Development.
The WARN notice states that on or about April 16, Sodexo received notice from Saginaw Public School District that, effective July 1, the school district will no longer use SodexoMAGIC to perform nutritional services at Saginaw Public Schools. Instead, the school district has elected to self-operate these services going forward.
