Some Good News; Unemployment Numbers Getting Better As the year unlike any other ends, there are some hopeful signs. So many people lost their jobs throughout the year, especially at the beginning of pandemic lock down and shutdown, that labor statistics skyrocket with bad numbers. But as we began to weather the storm some, those employment (or, unemployment) numbers have stabilized and have begun to return to where they were before 2020 became the year from hell. Overall, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says not seasonally adjusted jobless rates decreased in 14 of Michigan’s 17 major labor market areas between October and November. But there is an asterisk.

MDHHS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 30, 2020  CONTACT: Bob Wheaton, 517-241-2112 LANSING, Mich. – Today the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB) announced the launch of Spanish and Arabic language options for its anonymous exposure notification mobile app, MI COVID Alert. “It is critical that we continue to recognize and find ways to meet the diverse needs of communities across our state,” said Robert Gordon, director of MDHHS. “MI COVID Alert is an important tool in our continued efforts to bring the numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths down. We’re excited that this app update will break down language barriers and ensure access for more Michiganders.”

December 30, 2020 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com Changes allowing for greater accessibility and outreach have hit a phone app that could help keep Livingston County residents safe from COVID-19. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, has released Spanish and Arabic language options for the MI COVID Alert app. Spanish and Arabic speakers can now find those versions of the app in the Apple and Google app stores, or access them by going into their smartphone settings and setting their language and region to such. Oxford University researchers have found a positive potential to reducing infections and deaths when just 15% of a population uses an exposure notification app like MI COVID Alert. According to a release from the state health department, Michigan’s app has been downloaded by nearly 10% of Michigan residents ages 18 to 64.
