Michigan unemployment claims decline as filings rise nationally

New unemployment claims dropped in Michigan last week, bucking the trend nationwide, and returning to the more typical, yet elevated, levels seen over the last few months. New claims declined to 17,553 in the week ending Dec. 12, down from 23,408 the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. Last year at this time, there were about 10,000 new jobless claims filed. Nationally, unemployment claims increased to 885,000 last week, up from 862,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. Claims are lower than they were late last month, when they nearly doubled to more than 30,000 the same week a new restrictions were imposed on businesses, closing movie theaters, bowling alleys and banning indoor dining at restaurants.

Michigan’s November unemployment rate is 6.9%, the state announced Wednesday. It also adjusted October’s rate – moving it to 6.1% after the preliminary estimate of 5.5%. November’s 0.8% increase in the state’s unemployment rate is Michigan’s first rise since unemployment went from 4.3% in March to 24% in April.
