Video: Dave Schneider discusses behavioral health integration in Michigan Share this:     Schneider talked about the many attempts to integrate physical and behavioral health, the disruption of COVID and the two new plans being discussed in the legislature.  “In 2017 the legislature put language in the budget that required the Michigan Department of health and human services to implement up to three pilots to test the integration of physical and behavioral health. Then we set about trying to make this work. There were some limitations since we couldn’t change any statute or make any changes that couldn’t be undone and there are several barriers to do this without statute change. We were working on developing that… and along came COVID-19.”

Video: Corey Waller discusses addiction treatment in prisons Share this:     Waller talked about his successes in other states to bring to Michigan, creating cohorts of prisoners who want treatment and how to set prisoners up for success outside prison.  “I get asked a lot if there is one core aspect of addiction that we need to impart onto the community… It is really how we describe addiction. I think it is important to recognize that we don’t define addiction based on the presence or absence of a substance. We define it based on the behaviors associated with obtaining or using the substance. So if we can identify this population and stabilize their behaviors, then we don’t have to define it as active addiction. We can talk about it as remission and they can go on about their lives.”
