No state minimum wage increase for new year

The Michigan minimum wage is not going up today. The hourly minimum wage was supposed to increase from $9.65 to $9.87 January 1st. But, state law does not allow the scheduled increases when the previous year’s unemployment rate is above 8.5%. Because of a spike in unemployment in the spring and early summer, the average unemployment rate in Michigan for the year is higher than that. Unless the legislature acts, the minimum wage won’t increase until 2022 and only if the unemployment rate in Michigan remains close to levels seen in the last quarter of 2020 which hovered between 6 and 7%.

High unemployment rate means minimum rate probably won t be going up | 1450 AM 99 7 FM WHTC

By Ken Delaney Dec 12, 2020 2:18 AM LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It appears Michigan minimum wage will not be going up as scheduled at the first of the year. The Michigan Bureau of Employment Relations, Wage and Hour Division Friday said the state s scheduled minimum wage increase is not expected to go into effect because of a law that prohibits increases when the state s annual unemployment rate for the preceding calendar year is above 8.5%. While Michigan s October unemployment rate continued its downward trend and is 5.5%, the annual average from January through October currently sits at 10.2% and is highly unlikely to dip below the 8.5% threshold when the final 2020 unemployment numbers for Michigan.
