It has offices in Detroit, Lansing, and Grand Rapids. The organization was started in 1986 when Mary Jo Pulte gathered a group of 30 Michigan women to discuss philanthropy and the imbalance in donations to women’s programs only 3 percent of philanthropic dollars at the time went to programming for women in the U.S. MWF is the only statewide, public foundation working for the betterment of adult and young women. MWF offers microloans from $2,500 to $50,000 for small businesses legally established and registered within the state. There also has been personal loss. In December 2020, the museum s founder, a pioneering activist in the field of women s history, died of COVID-19. Then on the morning of Jan. 6, a century-old water main burst in downtown Lansing, resulting in flooding that covered the floor of the museum s gallery and office space with several inches of water. Two months later, the site s director, Meaghan Bergman, is waiting to find out when she can reopen. And she s dealing with another flood, this one metaphorical: the onslaught interviews and speaking engagements booked in March for Women’s History Month.
