ALPENA The use of tax incentives, zoning changes, policy revisions, and the creative use of current structures still haven’t kept up with a spiking demand for housing in Northeast Michigan.
Big demand and too little supply, rising construction costs, and limited construction workers in part because of the coronavirus pandemic caused the region’s housing shortage, The News learned after weeks of research and interviews with homebuyers, sellers, and real estate and economic development officials. The shortage means people who want to move to or within Alpena often have to wait months before they can land a home.

ALPENA Northeast Michiganders still deal with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, one year after the region’s first infection was reported by local health department officials.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s original stay-at-home orders last spring forced schools to move classes online, canceled community events, and caused businesses and restaurants to adapt and innovate to continue serving customers.
Gyms like Bay Athletic Club were closed more than they were open last year. Bay Athletic owner Trina Gray said her leadership team had to innovate to remain a part of club members’ lives.

HOUGHTON Paving, city beautification and lighting were among the priorities Houghton City Council members asked to see funded during a nontraditional first budget meeting for the year.
City Manager Eric Waara typically uses the first budget meeting to provide a high-level overview of the city’s projects for the year and noteworthy changes within the city’s general fund. With three new council members, and uncertainty about the conditions and amount of COVID-19 stimulus money, he instead turned the floor over to council members.
