LANSING, MI The following is a release from Senator Ed McBroom s office:
Michigan businesses with liquor licenses would not have to pay on-premises liquor license fees this year and an on-premises spirits discount would be increased and extended under legislation approved by the state Senate on Wednesday.
“Michigan’s bars and restaurants were hit hard by the state’s crushing response to the coronavirus,” said Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Waucedah Township, who sponsored Senate Bill 230. “Through no fault of their own, most establishments spent most of the past year closed and their staff out of work. It doesn’t make any sense to further punish bars and restaurants with liquor license fees they can’t afford because they weren’t allowed to conduct business. This bill provides them needed relief at a time when they’re just getting back on their feet.”

JACKSON, MI – Weekends and holidays could become casual drinking affairs on downtown Jackson streets.
The Jackson City Council voted 6-1 to approve the creation of a “social district” downtown at its April 27 virtual meeting. Councilman Freddie Dancy, Ward 2, voted no.
First introduced in Michigan last summer, the district designation allows local governments to establish areas where outdoor drinking is permitted in specially marked containers. The goal of the district is to open up business opportunities for restaurants and bars, an industry severely affected by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

Those districts include REO Town, Old Town, and downtown, which includes Rotary Park and part of the River Trail.
City Council President Peter Spadafore said the social districts will help businesses that have struggled during the pandemic.
“So, it s a short-term win during the pandemic to allow businesses to continue to operate at greater capacities without violating the gathering orders.”
Spadafore said the social districts will be funded by a combination of four groups around the city.
Those groups will oversee signage and design a unified logo for the common area where people can bring their drinks.
