Shawn Gonzalez, 39, was in custody at the county jail after his arrest in the slaying of Dolores Babij, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Carteret police were called to an unspecified first aid emergency shortly before 4 a.m. on Aug. 27 at Babij’s home, where they found her dead in a chair, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

Alejandro Urgilez, 33, was charged with forgery, theft by deception and uttering, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday. Urgilzez was charged after an investigation revealed that he altered copies of benefits checks issued by the board and deposited about $12,000 in stolen funds into his bank account, the office alleged. No other information was released Thursday night as the investigation into the alleged crime remained ongoing.
