It s a fairly good bet that Minnesota won t see a blizzard or snow squall the rest of this spring, but should a freak storm arise, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is ready to alert drivers quickly.
The agency has automated the process in which it takes warnings from the National Weather Service and relays them to motorists by posting messages on electronic sign boards across the state.
For the past couple of winters, MnDOT has used its 400 digital signs to broadcast blizzard warnings. And until this year, that job of updating signs fell primarily to Garrett Schreiner, a freeway operations engineer. Each time a blizzard struck, Schreiner headed to his computer to determine which areas of the state were being impacted and which signs were in the affected areas. Then he crafted and posted a messag

Despite the fact that the project is not slated to be done until five years from now, the Wells City Council once again spent a long time at their meeting last Monday night hearing an update on the Highway 22 and Highway 109 reconstruction project planned for 2026.
Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) employees Anne Wolff and Mat Thibert attended the meeting virtually and discussed several aspects of the project.
Wolff gave an update on the public feedback that was collected between Nov. 30, 2020, and Jan. 8, 2021.
The Itasca County Board met for a regular session at the Itasca County Courthouse on Tuesday.
During the meeting, commissioners approved an additional $15,000 in expected legal expenses for relocation efforts related to property acquisition for the construction of the new correctional facilities.
Attorneys with Rinke Noonan provided a letter why the budget had gone beyond its initial contract. The county board approved the original contract in August 2020. The board felt the issue was beyond the scope of the county attorney to handle the specialized service of relocating tenants.
County Administrator Brett Skyles recommended approving the additional $15,000.
âItâs not always easy to find relocation spots or relocate tenants in there,â Skyles said. âThis group (Rinke Noonan) has been excellent to work with and answered all my questions. Very responsive when it comes to any kind of communication and very professional. I was really glad we had some specialized co

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Work on the 27th Avenue West bridge over I-35 will result in some ramp and freeway closures on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) says the entrance ramp from 27th Avenue West to southbound I-35 will close between 8 p-m and 11 p-m on Wednesday.
That will allow contractors to move a crane from the west end of the bridge to the median.
Motorists are being asked to use the 40th Avenue West ramp to access southbound I-35 during that time.
On Thursday night, both north and southbound lanes of I-35 at 27th Avenue West will close at 8 p-m.

Construction crews are well on their way to rejuvenate and bring new energy to an aging stretch of interstate highway running north out of Minneapolis.
Clearing and grubbing operations for this 12-mi. project to replace deteriorating pavement and ease congestion began in the spring of 2019. Though a mid-April snow storm may have stalled crews, it did not stop them. With an ambitious schedule in hand, highway crews wasted no time moving into the bone-jarring operations of concrete and asphalt removal through this stretch of the road.
