National money is flowing into the political fight over the future of the Minneapolis Police Department, months before city residents could vote on its future.
In mid-November, the Open Society Policy Center based in Washington, D.C., donated $500,000 to a new political committee, Vote Yes For Minneapolis, that wants to eliminate the city s requirement to have a Police Department. The donation, first reported by the newsletter MPLS take and the Minnesota Reformer, was included in a campaign finance report filed late last month.
Minneapolis politics have drawn unprecedented scrutiny as city leaders and residents debate how to change policing in the wake of George Floyd s death and a dramatic uptick in violent crime.

A small group of Minneapolis City Council members is once again working on a proposal that could replace the current Police Department in the wake of George Floyd s death.
The proposal, which would have to go before voters, could place police and other public safety programs under a new department. This is really about bringing together different public safety strategies with law enforcement to be able to achieve better outcomes for all of the residents of our city, said Council Member Phillipe Cunningham, who is working on the proposal alongside Council Members Steve Fletcher and Jeremy Schroeder.

Two Minneapolis City Council Members are denying their involvement with the defund the police movement just days after the council approved a budget that shifted approximately $8 million from the police department and months after they joined colleagues in calling for the dismantlement of the Minnesota city s department.
City Council Member Steve Fletcher rejected the idea that the council s goal was to defund the police during a recent interview with local news station KSTP-TV – and instead said the budget cuts came as a result of the need to fund other programs.
