Feds weighing how to respond after verdict in Chauvin trial - New Delhi Times - India s Only International Newspaper

April 20, 2021 Share  The Biden administration is privately weighing how to handle the upcoming verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, including considering whether President Joe Biden should address the nation and dispatching specially trained community facilitators from the Justice Department, aides and officials told The Associated Press. Closing arguments began Monday in Chauvin’s trial with a prosecutor telling jurors that the officer “had to know” he was squeezing the life out of George Floyd as he cried over and over that he couldn’t breathe and finally fell silent. Chauvin faces murder and manslaughter charges.

Chauvin s guilty verdict was accountability, not justice And police can t ignore it

After Floyd verdict, US attorney general launches police probe

A day after former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd, US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Wednesday that his department is opening a sweeping investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department’s policing practices. “Yesterday’s verdict in the state criminal trial does not address potentially systemic policing issues in Minneapolis,” Garland said during a news conference at the US Justice Department in Washington, DC. “Today, I am announcing that the Justice Department is opening a civil investigation to determine whether the Minneapolis Police Department engages in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional or unlawful policing.”
