County, State Leaders React to Derek Chauvin Guilty Verdict
Montgomery County and state leaders are reacting to the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who on Tuesday was found guilty for the murder of George Floyd.
Chauvin was found guilty on all three of his charges: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin was convicted for killing Floyd, a Black man, after holding his knee on Floyd’s neck on May 25, 2020. According to a statement of probable cause filed in a Minnesota District Court, Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes, including three minutes after Floyd became unresponsive. Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill at a grocery store, which prompted the call to police. Witness footage of the killing sparked international outrage and calls for racial justice.
Following former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin’s conviction on all counts in the death of George Floyd, Democratic New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the murder trial outcome “is not justice.”

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) â The Chief of the Green Bay Police Department is reacting to the verdict in the Derek Chauvin case in Minneapolis.
Chief Andrew Smith says he isnât surprised that former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts in the death of George Floyd last May.
âWell I think a lot of people expected that,â said Smith immediately after the verdict was read. âI think looking at the videotape and looking at the evidence presented, I think it really wasnât a terribly big surprise that he was found guilty.â

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden said Tuesday the conviction of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd “can be a giant step forward” for the nation in the fight against systemic racism. But he declared that “it’s not enough.”
Biden spoke from the White House hours after the verdict alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, with the pair saying the country’s work is far from finished with the verdict.
“We can’t stop here,” Biden declared.
