POTSDAM The Potsdam Public Museum is celebrating 80 years in operation in its 81st year. Last year marked eight decades for the local institution, however, the pandemic and concerns over safety bumped the recognition of the milestone to 2021.
“We missed last year and it kind of occurred to me that we should do something,” said Museum Director Erin Cheney about the 80-year milestone.
A small exhibit commemorating the 80 years of the museum has been set up, with historical photos spanning the years. Also featured are bios and photos of each of the 9 museum directors over the years and their contributions.

POTSDAM – A “Changing of the Guard” recently took place as the retiring director of Potsdam Public Museum assisted the new director last month.
Mimi Van Deusen retired after serving as museum director for the past 14 years. Erin Cheney, of West Stockholm, is now filling her shoes.
They both noted there are a lot of “moving parts to this job.” Van Deusen and Cheney said the job includes building of exhibits, maintaining collections, archiving new additions, public outreach, budgeting, and communicating with the Museum, Village, and Town Boards, and the Friends of the Museum.
