Santiago Calatrava is a controversial architect, somewhat in the mold of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright.
A Ph.D. engineer as well as an architect, he is a designer of the first order, creating neo-modernist sculptures that also serve as buildings.
A Calatrava bridge, museum or train station, quite often inspired by designs found in nature, can turn an otherwise nondescript locale into a tourist attraction. A bright star on the architectural map.

Now in his mid-60s, Calatrava appears to be as sensitive as his architecture. Former Lakeland reporter Mary Toothman of The Ledger described Calatrava as a kind, “very sweet” man. She expected arrogance, but instead found herself interviewing a man with a bit of attention-deficit disorder who sketched a profile of her as they spoke.

.-Sothebys announced Natively Digital: A Curated NFT Sale, representing the first time a major auction house will bring together a group survey of the leading NFT artists to auction. Hosted directly through Sothebys online auction platform, Natively Digital will feature some of the most sought after works made throughout the seven-year history of the medium; the curated auction will be highlighted by Kevin McCoys Quantum, the first NFT ever minted, the only existing masked Alien Cryptopunk by Larva Labs, and The Shell Record by leading generative artist, Anna Ridler. The additional NFT artists and artworks included in the auction will be unveiled in the lead up to the sale, which will be open for bidding from June 3 - 10.

Free and open to all via Zoom Join the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Contemporary Art Society for a virtual conversation with German artist Katharina Grosse and Margaret Andera, interim chief curator and curator of contemporary art.
Untitled (2019) by Grosse was recently acquired for the Museum’s collection, with support from the Contemporary Art Society. The painting is not only the first work by the artist to enter the collection but also the first by a female artist in the Museum’s collection of contemporary German paintings.

Grosse is known for her brightly colored acrylic paintings and installations, explorations of color density and temperature, and the interplay between color and light. Grosse has exhibited internationally, and her work is in major museum collections, including at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York.
When an old Western Union office building in downtown Jacksonville was renovated into a six-floor art museum in the early part of the 21st century, no one knew quite what to do with the walls of the central staircase, which rise 40 feet above the lobby.
Enter Marcelle Polednik.
Polednik, now director of the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisconsin, was hired as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville in early 2006 and immediately started thinking about what she could do with those big white walls. What made this one unique from my perspective was the staircases going up, the visibility from the lobby and the visibility from the different floors, Polednik said in a phone interview last week.
