Robert Smith, Harry G. John Professor of History and the director of the Center for Urban Research, Teaching, and Outreach (CURTO) at Marquette University, has received an award of $745,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the Education Preparedness Program (EPP), an initiative through CURTO that will support those impacted by incarceration to succeed in higher education.
Grants through the Higher Education in Prison program are intended to disrupt the cycle of inequality and intergenerational poverty and restore the humanity and dignity of currently and formerly incarcerated (CFI) students. The University of Wisconsin System and UW-Madison have not kept pace with their peers nationally in key funding areas due to the state’s tuition freeze, stagnant funding and declining enrollments over the past decade,
Those challenges, exacerbated by COVID-19, could lead to more faculty cuts, reduced programs and additional debt for the UW System and its flagship campus if they don’t find new revenue sources, the report said.
“After years of slow erosion of funding and enrollment, higher education in Wisconsin faces a flash flood,” the report said.

Dr. Naydeen Gonzalez-De Jesus has been appointed Milwaukee Area Technical College’s executive vice president of student success, bringing together academics and student services in a new structure. She has served as the public diplomacy officer for the U.S. Embassy in Argentina; and in leadership positions in student services and academics at Bergen Community College, Rowan College at Burlington County, and Salem Community College. She holds a bachelor’s from Penn State University, a master’s from Rowan University and a doctorate from Northcentral University.

Laquitha âElleâ Bonds has been appointed vice president, human resources at Milwaukee Area Technical College. She will oversee talent management, succession planning, innovation, collaboration, employee recognition, compensation, benefits, legal compliance and data analysis; position MATC as a preferred employer; and serve as a change agent for diversity, equity, inclusion and multiculturalism.
