Chalk Talk: Thrift on underspins in clear water

Chalk Talk: Thrift on underspins in clear water Friday, January 22, 2021 ( Editor s note: The following is the latest installment in a series of fishing tips presented by The Bass University. Check back each Friday for a new tip.) When bass of any kind are suspended in clear water, North Carolina superstar Bryan Thrift is quick to reach for an underspin with a swimbait on the back. He likes the ones from Damiki, in both 1/4- and 3/8-ounce weights. He puts a 3-inch Damiki Armor Shad on the former and fishes it in 10 to 20 feet of water, and uses a 5-inch Armor Shad on the latter and uses it in the 15- to 35-foot range. He likes the Damiki underspin over the competition because it has a recessed head that allows it to be rigged super-straight, and also because it has a blade that is thinner and not as cupped as other models, which means it’ll still spin when you fish it exceptionally slowly.

Don t Be Intimidated By Cold, Muddy Water

Don t Be Intimidated By Cold, Muddy Water Thursday, January 21, 2021 Photo: Courtesy of Dustin Wilks One of the advantages of fishing muddy water in the wintertime is that you often have the lake to yourself. The six-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier writes about various aspects of the sport in these periodic submissions.) My dad told me in a recent phone conversation that 2020 was the wettest year since the 1800s for North Carolina (I asked him if he remembered that year). A few months ago, we had 9 inches come down in just half a day. One town had 38 inches of rain! I have never seen so much water moving everywhere – even ponds in the middle of the woods now have current.
